I interviewed one of my friends, Juliana, who is pursuing a career as a middle grades teacher. I thought the topic of using social media in the math classroom would be interesting to her because it would get her thinking of creative ways that she could use technology in her future classroom and possibly even some aspects of social media. Although my particular question is focused on high school students, I thought she could use some of my tips and I could use some of her insight into things that she has learned being an education major.
In my interview, I mentioned many of the tools that we have learned about in EDIT as well as tools that I have explored on my own. I mentioned how I used Twitter chats to conduct some research on my Genius Hour Project, and this was something that she had never heard of. I told her about a few chats for teachers and since she has turned in to one that she found very useful. I also told her about how each tweet on twitter has it’s own set of analytics on it and how I planned to use that as a way for teachers to use Twitter in the math classroom.
I learned a few things from her as well. She gave me some new ideas on how I could propose for teachers to use Snapchat in the math classroom. She said that in one of her classes, she had to collect stats from a social media platform and she used a sports blogger that she found on the discover page of Snapchat in order to collect her data. I hope to be able to use the discover page of Snapchat in some proposed ideas for how teachers can use social media in the math classroom. This interview gave me some new ideas on lesson planning. It also pointed out to me that I need to continue to research uses of Instagram which is also included in my GHP question.
